People have been talking about this Miss South Carolina video all day that’s been floating around youtube and I guess it’s a part of the Miss USA pageant that I stopped paying attention to after I turned 14. I figured she incorrectly answered a simple question, but I just got done watching the video and … I have no idea what she just said. Miss South Carolina was asked the question “A fifth of Americans are unable to locate the United States on a map. Why is that?”
The correct answer of course is because a fifth of Americans are horribly stupid but that’s not why we’re here. This poor woman, and I will call her a poor woman because I actually feel bad for her, completely fell apart to a degree like I haven’t seen in some time. It gets to a point where you start to beg her to just shut up because she digs and digs a digs a hole for herself so deep she might as well go ahead and talk foreign relations with the head of China while she’s down there.
It doesn’t help that midway through her voice gets to a point during a sentence where it’s completely nonsensical. I don’t know if it’s her accent or if she just started speaking another language because she knew she was beginning to sound idiotic and was attempting to save face, but it came out like she said:
“Osoma people out there in our nation don’t have maps, and uh I believe that our uh our education like such as in South Africa and uh the Iraq and every like suchas and ….. I believe that they should uh our education over here in the US should help the US uh or should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we may be able to help build up our future here for us.”
We could question many things here. Why, if Americans can’t find the country they live in, do we need to educate South Africa and the Iraq? Why does she refer to Iraq as “the Iraq” over and over again? How does educating Asian countries help Americans find the US on a map? Why does she speak in tongues?
To top it off, after the rambling is through she smiles this big smile, a smile that some people call her out on but really, what else was she supposed to do? The smile was more of an “alright, I just made a fool out of myself, take pity on me please?” kind of smile than anything else.
I won’t make fun of her … though I suppose I already have. Nevermind. Regardless, I’m more mortified that a fifth of the people in this country don’t know where the US is on a map. I get annoyed when people call out Americans for not being able to find say, Afghanistan or Iraq but the United States? It’s not like there’s 45 other small countries around it or anything.
