Who Is Lisa Ling And Why Do I Care That She Sleeps In Her Husband’s Boxers?

So there’s this commercial on television that I’ve seen a couple times this past weekend that has me asking questions. The advertisement in question is a Folgers Coffee commercial staring Lisa Ling, who I mistakenly confused with Lucy Liu the first couple times I saw the ad because they both have names that start with L L and I’m simple minded like that in the morning when I tend to see it.

It starts off with this woman getting out of bed as her voice over says “I sleep in my husband’s boxers”. She then giggles to herself, like this is somehow really funny. I’m already confused. It says Lisa is a journalist and I’m trying to figure out when the chick from Charlie’s Angels became a reporter and why I’ve never heard of this. A couple viewings later and a friend reminds me the actress is named Lucy, not Lisa. Duh me. After checking out Wiki, Lisa Ling is actually an ex View host that’s currently on Oprah which explains why I couldn’t place the name.

Lisa Ling has really thin looking legs which might be due to the camera angle as she’s getting out of bed but if not I really hope she eats a bagel or two while drinking that morning coffee for safety sake. It’s like she’s walking on twigs. The rest of the commercial is unexciting. She drinks coffee, reads the paper, and goes jogging because the power of coffee enabled her to be able to move.

It makes me wonder why people pay celebrities to do commercials like this for them. Things like clothing endorsements I can understand. People want to look like celebrities because they make money and men / women find them sexy. The difference here is people who don’t drink coffee aren’t going to be swayed based on celebrity endorsements. Can anyone see someone buying Folgers because Lisa Ling drinks it? It’s coffee, I don’t care if you get some random college person to tell me why it’s the best coffee to drink when you have to stay up late and cram for a report. I wonder how much more money they had to pay Ling than some cheap actor. Just made me think.

The real question is what the bloomin’ hell was with the boxers statement at the beginning? Was it to try and normalize Ling somehow? “I’m on Oprah, but I still sleep in my husbands boxers just like many of you do.” It’s one of the strangest ways to open a commercial I’ve ever seen. Thank God she doesn’t usually sleep naked or the FCC would’ve had a fit.
