An experiment in mixing scents with technology is taking place at the Tokyo JR train line thanks to a digital sign being developed by NTT Communications. As I understand it the sign uses bottles of scents that are ultrasonically sent out throughout the day and night. The sign can emit the scent of beer were it displaying an ad for alcohol for example. Somehow the sign is supposed to be able to download updated scents. If the scents are bottled how does it download liquids? I must be missing something here.
Gizmodo jokes that hackers could do some devious stuff with signs like this, but personally I’m looking forward to the technology coming to websites. Every time I write about Lindsay Lohan we can emit the scent of alcohol, every time we write about Angelina Jolie we can emit the sweet smell of lovely flowers, and everytime we cover Britney Spears getting caught without her panties we can emit the smell of …. err, I’ll just let you fill in the blanks.
